Rear Admiral Richard Evelyn Byrd Jr and Charles R Walgreen
ABOUT
326 Amherst Street Winchester VA was a 7 bedroom home purchased in 1887 by Admiral Byrd's father. Walgreens now sits on this location. The goal here is to tell the story of the connection between Walgreens and Admiral Byrd.
Polar Explorer Byrd's boyhood home sat on this site now occupied by a Walgreens store.
It was Walgreens who financed Byrd's explorations of Antarctica. In gratitude Byrd named a coast of Antarctica, the Walgreen Coast.
Walgreen Coast is that portion of the coast of Antarctica between Cape Herlacher and Cape Waite. Discovered by and members of the U.S. Antarctic Service (USAS) in flights from the USS Bear in February 1940.
Named by Byrd for president of the Walgreen Drug Co. of Chicago, who was a supporter of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition (ByrdAE), 1933-35, and assisted in equipping the Bear (an airplane) for the U.S. Antarctic Service (USAS), 1939-41.
This coast was mapped in detail by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) from ground surveys and U.S. Navy air photos, 1959-66.
THE ABOVE photo shows Rear Admiral Byrd's child hood home where now Walgreen sits.
In the foreground of same photo is the Esso Gas Station which is now Bonnie Blue's a restaurant and catering and carryout service.
To the left is a video of the same location shown above how it looks today in 2014.
