GW's Slaves and Slavery - Full Dose
George Washington did buy slaves while building of Fort Loudoun continued. And now after marriage to Martha 6 Jan 1759, he inherited even more. Chernow states, "During the frosty first winter of his marriage, he grew alarmed by the death of four slaves by late January [1759], three of them dower slaves from the Custis estate."

Little Carpenter and his group was in Winchester VA 9 Jan 1759. They arrive in Williamsburg 19 Jan 1759. They have an audience with the Governor Fauquier and his Executive Council (a sort of combo upper chamber to the House of Burgesses and a state Supreme Court).

George Washington had bought a horse from George Mercer in 1755. George Washington then sold the horse, recording his profit 10 Feb 1759. A grey flea bitten horse isn't really flea bitten. The descriptive term for the horse arose from maybe looking as if they were flea bitten.

Monmouth Street Winchestr VA comes from this ghastly event:
It is said that before laying his head to the block Monmouth specifically bade
Jack Ketch finish him at one blow, saying he had mauled others before. Disconcerted, Ketch did indeed inflict multiple blows with his axe, the prisoner rising up reproachfully the while - a ghastly sight that shocked the witnesses, drawing forth execrations and groans. Some say a knife was at last employed to sever the head from the twitching body. Sources vary; some claim eight blows, the official Tower of London fact sheet says it took five blows..."

This story about Alexander Finnie refurbishing the Braddock Road was posted first in July 2023, since we are covering 1759. But we repeat this story again because although this story occurred in July 1759, the principals of the story didn't get paid until Nov 1759. By November 9, 1759 Burgess George Washington is tasked in a committee to reimburse Finnie for his services.

Washington's first known portrait
by Charles Willson Peale (1741–1827).
Washington poses in his Virginia Regiment uniform for the French and Indian War, two years after the Boston Massacre.
.
From Founders Online Footnote:
Peale “came to Mount Vernon on 18 May 1772, and GW finished sitting for his portrait in his uniform as colonel of the Virginia Regiment on 22 April 1773……before setting out for Leesburg where he joined Bryan Fairfax. Peale remained at Mount Vernon to paint miniatures of Martha Washington and of John Parke and Martha Parke Custis. GW charged Martha Parke Custis’s miniature to her account, and those of John Parke Custis and Martha Washington to Custis’s account. “
