On Sundayafternoon 6/29/2025, Eric Robinson and I slipped into another Chapter of the Clowser massacre of 1764, even though we had dinner at a Hong Kong restaurant after this pursuit.
.
But let's set the stage of this Clowser Massacre story.
.
At the entrance to Shawneeland is the Clowser cemetery and a house built later than the massacre. Some were killed at the nearby burned down LLoyd house and some were taken hostage.
.
Mary Thomas was one of those taken hostage. She would retell this story many times throughout her life with little hint of emotional scarring --- according to Kercheval interviews of those who knew her in the 1820s, long after this 1764 attack by the Delawares.
.
There's a lot to this story.
.
The picture shows her escape far away from Shawneeland. The rest of the hostages taken at Shawneeland were whisked all the way to Ohio as if they rode on motorcycles.
.
Colonel Bouquest brought back some of those Hostages. After the Battle of Bushy Run near Pittsburgh area, the Indians knew he meant he would burn down all their villages in the Ohio country if they didn't give up their white hostages.
.
This map shows where Mary Thomas escaped.
And the other picture is Eric Robinson and Jim Moyer imbibing a little Hong Hong in the area. Eric graciously paid my dinner and drove us through this beautiful part of the world.
.
Skip around.
.
Read little bits and pieces.
Here's the rest of that story.
