King Charles III, II and I
We've just witnessed the coronation of King Charles III, Saturday 5/6/2023. But this makes a good reason to ask who the previous Charles was - King Charles II.
A series of English Civil Wars over religion and power occurred
Parliament revolted from King Charles I.
Then Oliver Cromwell led as Lord Protector with Parliament.
After that fell apart, King Charles II, the son of King Charles I, was then restored to power.
That was called the RESTORATION, the restoring of the Monarchy in May 1660. He dies in 1685.
After his death, King James II assumes power. King James II had appointed Edmund Andros as Governor of the Dominion of New England. and who abolished the local legislature there. Andros had been Governor at various times of NY, east and west Jersey and Virginia.
KIng James II favors Catholicism in a country long suspicious of the Vatican. A fight over Catholic supremacy in a Protestant England ensues again.
See a Nathaniel Hawthorne story of that time: The Gray Champion.
This finally led to William of Orange being invited to invade England . King James II [the same James, Duke of York] flees to France. The Parliament then invited William to be their new King. This was the Glorious Revolution of 1688.
This was the William and Mary of William and Mary College. Mary was the daughter of James II. William and Mary co-ruled until she died in 1694.
Here is a very unusual picture between King Charles 1 and the future King James II.
James was the younger brother of Charles II and both were sons of King Charles I.
Looking at each other sideways, aren't they?
And the hands come forward but don't touch.
