Thank you Candidates - GW election reenactment
For the 5th annual reenactment of the 24 July 1758 election on 22 July 2023:
THANK YOU TO
The Candidates -- a big thank you for perservering a hot day yesterday.
Thank you to:
This is a reenactment of a 24 July 1758 election, when were still part of the British Empire.
Seth Thatcher,
Frederick Co Commissioner of Revenue, will be playing Hugh West.
Jay W Foreman,
former Frederick Co School Board member, will be playing Thomas Swearingen, One of two lieutenants in Captain Robert Rutherford’s company of rangers and Brother of Van Swearingen, the next High Sheriff of Frederick County
They are the two incumbents in the House of Burgesses representing Frederick County.
The two challengers are Colonel George Washington and Thomas Bryan Martin.
Stevan Resan
long serving Vice President of the French and Indian War Foundation, who will be playing James Wood, founder of Winchester, who stood in for Colonel George Washington who was helping the Forbes Expedition out of Fort Cumberland and here in town Fort Loudoun.
Frederick Meyle
A reenactor who was 16 when he joined the George Mercer Co of Colonel George Washington's Virginia Regiment, will be representing Thomas Bryan Martin. He was the nephew of Lord Fairfax. He was the the most important man of all in this election. If you wanted land in this county, you had to go through him. Adam Stephen was a Lt Colonel in 1758 under Colonel George Washington and who was 20 years later a General in the Revolutionary War, and who was courtmartialed for being drunk and for being involved in a Friendly Fire disaster at the Battle of Germantown (now part of Philly) left the army and didn't stop for a moment. He created Martinsburg in 1777, naming it after this Thomas Bryan Martin, a passive loyal like his Uncle, Lord Fairfax, during the heart of the Revolutionary War.
Jim Moyer,
member of the French and Indian War Foundation, runs a website on Fort Loudoun and French and Indian War history, and in loan servicing at Navy Federal Credit Union, started this event over an idea he heard years before by Bret Osborne who proposed it to the French and Indian War Foundation.
And oh last but not least,
Mayor of Middletown Charles Harbaugh IV who will be on hand to answer questions as Colonel George Washington. He has been very helpful since day 1 the first time we reenacted this event. This is our 5th year doing this.
And David Downes of the Virginia Beer Museum. Also his 5th year of helping the voters to refreshment and a decision.
To reenact once again how Colonel George Washington provided alcohol for every voter who came.
And Tony Elar Jr,
as Captain George Mercer and aide de camp to Colonel George Washington's Virginia Regiment
Larry Allen Clowser Webb -- who is indispensbile to us recording these events, providing these pictures.
