The Chessboard as of June 1757

Where is everybody at this moment in June of 1757?

This chessboard, as you see, shows you some of the players

Lord Loudoun

Lord Loudoun left his conference with the southern Governors in Philly at end of March to go back to NYC and then to Halifax Nova Scotia to plan an attack on French Canada; He plan to hit Quebec city but William Pitt, the grand strategist of this world wide war orders Lord Loudoun to descend on Fortress Louisbourg, who shares a history with Winchester VA. The heroes in the successful seige of 1758 are why our Winchester streets are named after Amherst, Boscawen, Wolfe and even the unsuccessful Loudoun.

New York's Governor has already gone to Halifax ahead of Lord Loudoun.

We will continue our trek thru 1757 to give you a report on the war in June.

.

Next week will be on where everybody else went.

This world wide war in just this theatre of Winchester was all about the "reduction" of Fort Duquesne.

.

That's why we have a cannon on the corner of Cork and Braddock Street aiming in that direction -- of the future Pittsburgh, where Fort Duquesne, the French fort sits now in 1757.

This cannon was left behind by Braddock in Alexandria by Braddock in 1755 who did not obtain enough of all the Kings horse to put his expedition on the road in timely manner. This cannon has a sister. It still sits on Braddock Road in Alexandria.

.

Reduction --- that's a word they used to take down the enemy fortification.
